Different Braid Hairstyles
Braids were originally used by native African people. The reasons for which they had braids weren’t only aesthetical or practical, like nowadays, they also were sending messages by them, braids having meanings. This way they could ‘tell’ the others which tribe they belong to, whether they are married or not and many other different things.
In our times braids have lost this function and although it is considered to be a typical African American hairstyle, people all over the world wear braids not regarding their gender, age or ethnicity.
The hairstylists of our times have taken braiding to a whole another level. It isn’t just hairstyle anymore, it has already become art.
The length of the hair is almost irrelevant in the case of braids; shorter hair can be braided as well. There are more different types of braids, including box braids, micro braids, invisible braids, cornrow braids and zigzag braids. These techniques can be used separately or combined to achieve even more unique hairstyles. They can’t be combined only between them, but with other hairstyles as well. For example one can have a bun and braids at the same time. When it comes to hairstyles nothing is forbidden or limited. Only our creativity can stop us.
There are two main braiding techniques: the hair from the side is brought over the middle or under the middle. I have found different braid hairstyles that are already considered to be classics. One of them is the English braid. In this case the hair is combed to the back and divided into three parts, then simply braided using the side over the middle technique. The French braid is another very popular hairstyle that is made using a strand from the forehead and one from each side of the head. As you bring each side strand to the middle, add a bit more hair from that side of the head. Be careful not to pull too tightly. The Dutch braid is just a bit more different than the French braid because instead of using the side over the top technique, you must use the side under the top technique. The Swiss braid resembles a bit the English braid. In this case the hair should be parted in two from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Each side has to be braided like the English braids.
Then take the braid from the right side and curl it across your hairline toward the left ear and back where it began. Do the same with the right part toward the left ear. It will form something like a crown if you pin it where needed. The rope braid is a very easy technique although it looks quite complicated. Pull your hair into a ponytail and part the hair into two even strands, then twist each strand clockwise. After this wrap the left strand around the right one counter-clockwise and secure the ends.
