It also has various layers and as the nail starts splitting, the layers are taken down one at a time. More to the nail, there is the distal edge, the eponychium, the paronychium and the nail wall.
From a medical and scientifically point of view, why do people have fingernails, the main reason is that it actually protects the distal phalanx, the fingertip and the surrounding soft tissue from different injuries, your fingernails may be subjected to. It is also essentially for us to grab something, and we can do this just by the aid of our fingernails. This is if you look at it, a kind of “tool”.
