Hairstyle & Haircut Collection by Shelia Dominguez

Victorian Hairstyles

In this period, having your hair done was imperative! And not only: the way you were dressing and the way you were wearing your make up were essential. French hairstyles became very popular at that time, and so does the hairdos implying delicate flowers. It suggested indeed, a lot of elegance and purity.

It seems that the trend setter regarding Victorian hairstyles was The Austrian empress Elizabeth, who was the first that wanted flowers in her hair and not only! She is the one that started the current of „barley curls”. Her look was inspired from children, who were wearing „sugar curls” at that time. Of course, the empress adapted those modest but pretty hairdos at her complicated personality, and she started wearing them alongside a coiled chignon. This was happening in the early 1840’s, when the elegant hats where in fashion. The designers won a fortune by making pretty hats decorated with ribbons and plumes.

In the 1870’s, the women decided to wear their hair free, long and full, since they wanted to create a natural and pure look. And we can observe this in the pre-Raphaelite portraits, where the women were often wearing her hair in ringlets or large loops. But in 1872, a very important aspect regarding hairstyle in that period was discovered, or better said, invented: crimping. An attractive wave was created by pulling the hair over a hot iron – this was what crimping meaned. And the hairstylists had a great imagination! They created different looks using the hot iron, such as „The Marcel Wave”, that was very popular between ladies.

In the 1880’s another hairdos were adopted by all the women who wanted to follow the trends. For example, Pompadour was a style in which the hair was swept up high from the forehead, and this wasn’t the only thing! Sometimes, fake hair pieced were added in order to give the impression of height and dept. And, in this way, another hairdo was invented: The Titus, that meant cutting the hair close around the head. Rich ladies wanted their hair curly and they used the natural accessories that we mentioned before, meaning the flowers and other sophisticated ornaments, that offered them an elegant look.

“Gay Nineties” practically represents the end of the high victorian hairstyles and “The Gibson Girl” gained a lot of popularity, due to its natural side. It was a very famous hairdo especially between young girls, who were wearing pretty buns. In general, the women started wearing small coiffures and French twists, besides their flowers, that were really a must have in that period.

Along time, different actresses tried to recreate the victorian hairstyles; some succeeded, others not. It is very simple to get a hairdo like this, if you try something natural and not very complicated. First of all, you must have a long hair. If you have natural curls, good for you! If you don’t, using the curling iron, try some soft curls. After this, try to do your hair like in these images. It might take you a lot of time, but if you really want to succeed, you must be calm and you will look like a victorian empress!

Micro Braid Hairstyles

Nowadays braided hairstyles are considered to be very fashionable and trendy. In the past braids were worn by African people and these braids had a lot of meanings. In our times braids only have aesthetic and practical functions. A braided hairstyle is great to keep you hair at bay during the summer. There are several types of braids including box braids, micro braids, invisible braids, cornrow braids and zigzag braids.

In this article I am going to write about micro braids, also called invisible braids.

These braids are smaller than the traditional braids; they are very tiny and are braided from the scalp to a certain point. In most of the cases the ends are left loose. While creating the braids usually extensions are used, so that the braids will look better.

Before getting your hair braided you should analyze the situation of your hair. Micro braids are quite difficult to maintain and they can damage your hair. If your hair is already thin, brittle, fragile or damaged, then I would not recommend for you to get it braided. After the braids re removed your hair could be damaged beyond repair.

Your next step should be to find a braiding salon where professionals will take care of your hair. Micro braids can cause great damage is they aren’t done properly. If you let professionals take care of them you should have no problems.

Before you actually get your hair braided you should make sure that your hair is in great condition. You should also wash it right before the braiding process, because you won’t be able to properly wash your hair while you have braids so make sure that you do a thorough job. If you have any type of sores or scabs you should wait for them to heal.

Before the braiding process begins it is advisable to put on the hair some mousse or gel, so the braids will be better fixed. While braiding it is very important for the braids not to be braided too tight. If you feel pain you should tell the braider to loosen the braid until it is comfortable. Don’t think that the pain will go away. It isn’t a good idea to have very thin braids, because they can cause more damage.

After your hair is braided you must take proper care of it. Make sure that moisturize the hair with a good braid spray. You should also wash your hair at least once a week. Watch out what kind of conditioner you use while you have braids. Some might be harder to wash so make sure that the conditioner doesn’t leave residues.

After two or three months you should have them removed so that you hair can recover from the stress of being braided. When removing the braids one must be very gentle because the hair is fragile at this point.

Having micro braids might also affect your lifestyle. You shouldn’t get dehydrated because it might have effects on your hair as well.
