Lines on fingernails are often associated with getting old, especially the vertical lines on fingernails. As time passes and just like the hair and the skin suffers changes so do the fingernails. This happens as a lack of hydration, as a too much usage of water, of chemical products etc. anyhow, if the lines on fingernails develop any other state or get deeper, you should start worrying, as it may be a fungal infection or even something more serious.

Whereas the vertical lines on fingernails seem to raise fewer concern, horizontal lines on fingernails, may indicate a more serious health condition. Horizontal lines may come in different color; therefore, there may be white horizontal lines in fingernails, black horizontal lines in fingernails or just darker horizontal lines in fingernails.
The white lines on fingernails that are composed from two white lines that get together are known under the name of Muerhcke lines. They appear as a result of some treatments, like drugs or medicines taken during the chemotherapy, or they may bluntly suggest low albumin levels, caused by some form of cancer. They can also be associated with kidney problems, arsenic poisoning. When seizing this thing, one should go for a specialist and seek the advice.

The black lines on fingernails are usually a result of a black fungus appeared or caught by having direct contact with a certain person that had it. These may also be caused by a splinter hemorrhage, named like this due to the way it looks. If the line on your fingernail is darker in color, it may be because of that, which signifies that the heart valves have suffered an infection or something.
However, not all horizontal lines on fingernails are a sign of concern. They may just be cause by an external factor, and with time, the fingernail will be replaced as another one will grow.
If you are aware of the fact that you did not suffer any physical trauma, and you observe some suspect lines on your fingernails, you should go and seek a specialist advice.
